Galaxy Slime Experiment
Long play
Fancy holding a galaxy in your hand? Create non-toxic, homemade slime with clear glue, hot water, and baking soda – 3 simple ingredients easily found at home. No contact lens solution or detergent is needed for this fun and easy galaxy slime science experiment for kids.
What You Need
60 g of baking soda
500 ml of hot water
200 ml Elmer’s Clear Glue
2 containers
1 spoon
1 tray
How to Do It
Pour out 60 g of baking soda into a container.
Pour 500 ml of hot water into the container of baking soda.
Stir to mix and cool completely.
While waiting for the baking soda mixture to cool completely, pour out 200 ml of Elmer's Clear Glue into a separate container.
[Optional] Put in your favourite glitter and bits into the clear glue.
Mix the cooled baking soda mixture in bit by bit into the clear glue. Stir to mix the mixture with a spoon as you pour the baking soda mixture in slowly. You will start to see the mixture turn cloudy and clump together. We used about 350 ml of baking soda mixture in total.
Continue mixing it until you see a clear separation of slime and clear liquid.
Take the wet slime out and start folding and pulling to remove the excess water in the slime. You can squeeze the slime as you fold to remove more excess water at a faster rate.
[Optional] Split the slime into 3 parts and start to paint in your favourite galaxy colours with paint/ food dye. Put the 3 parts together and fold them into each other. You’ll have a beautiful mixture of colours of the galaxy in your hand!
Science Behind It
What is a galaxy? A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems, all held together by gravity.
According to NASA, our galaxies are about 10 billion years old (that’s a really long time!). Our solar system is part of the Milky Way galaxy.
When we look up at the stars at night, we’re staring at other stars in the Milky Way. Have you seen bands of the Milky Way before from where you live?
Hints and Tips
Even if you start off with more than one colour of slime, over folding will cause the slime to become one colour eventually.
If you use food dye, your hands and nails will be dyed as well. Not to worry, it will come off after a few washes.
